Serif font
Serifs originated from the Latin alphabet with inscriptional lettering- words carved into stone in Roman antiquity. In 1734 William Caslon created a typeface which featured straighter serifs and more obvious contrasts between thin and bold stroke. Serif font is used with long passages because it helps the eye travel across a line. Some examples of serif type fonts are Times New Roman, Garamond, Baskerville, Georgia, and Courier New. Serif font have decorated lines or tapers also commonly referred to as 'tails' or 'feet', and sans serif fonts don't- The word 'sans' in Latin means 'Without' in English.
Some examples of sans serif fonts are, Arial, Helvetica, and Tahoma. However the main difference between the two fonts is that the small features on the ends of strokes are known as serifs. Sans serifs do not include the small features on the end of the letters.
Serif fonts are easily readable at small body copy sizes, and sans serif fonts really stand out large titles.
Therefore for my thriller opening scene, where I show the credits and titles, I will use a serif font for the credits so the audience can easily read it, and a sans serif font for the Title of the film to make it stand out more.
Fonts in thriller films are used for many different purposes, such as the colour of the font can connote an early message to the audience of what the film may be about and include. For example a red font might suggest the film includes blood, death and danger. Fonts can also show the sub-genre that the creators have included with their thriller. For example if the sub-genre was a horror the font uses may be disorientated, suggesting to the audience that the film includes this theme.
In the film Se7en the font used in the opening title sequence is blurry and disorientated, showing the audience that the film may include uneasy scenes with violent conduct. Overall fonts are used to inform the audience what they can look forward too. Also use colour and connotations of the colour used to show ideas and genres within the film. The size of font can be used to make certain words stand out which can make the audience decode the message in different ways making it more unpredictable on what will happen in the film.
