Thriller film that has inspired me

The joker has inspired me through its sound, camerawork and M-E-S.

Sound

In the scene I have linked the joker has sprinted to a toilet after killing 3 people on the train. The reason I am inspired by this scene is because of the way the non diagetic sound of the music plays but the joker can clearly hear it in his own head, this makes the scene so much more powerful as the joker is really dancing to no music. The type of music chosen calms the situation down and is complete opposite to what type of music should be chosen considering what he has just done. This makes the audience feel uneasy as they can see the joker so calm. This scene is where Arthur Fleck starts to die and the Joker is born. When he leaves the bathroom the sound begins to become more intense, with drums added and a faster pace to the music. This is powerful as the audience senses the joker has just been born. The music chosen signals freedom, letting go all the pain you have ever had over so many years and being born again.

Camerawork and editing- In this scene I am also inspired by the use of the camerawork . It starts off with the joker sprinting to the bathroom, as he sprints the camera follows quickly from behind and we see a long wide shot. It then cuts to a low medium shot and then cuts back again to the long wide shot from behind following quickly. This is effective as it shows the audience the setting and how extreme the situation the joker is in. When he reaches the bathroom the camera is already in the bathroom before he is, when he slams through the door, as we can hear the door slam the camera cuts to in the bathroom where the camera is showing him through a mirror. It then cuts to a close up of him heavily breathing with both hands on the door keeping it closed. The camera them pans and moves down his body to his feet slowly, where the music begins and he starts to dance. This is effective as the camerawork makes the audience feel like something odd is about to happen by the pace and movements of the camera. It then slowly pans up his body back to a medium shot of him. The camera follows his movements slowly.  The camerawork almost tells the story which is why it inspires me. After he is done dancing he walks out with the camera following him from behind in slow-motion . This creates massive effect and makes the audience feel like he is powerful and like a new person. The slow-motion sends a message to the audience that he has forgotten all he has done and became a completely different person. The editing Is effective as the cuts are timed perfectly with sounds and movements.

I like this Extreme long shot as it showcases the setting really well, and the lighting links well with the mood of the scene and the situation the joker is in. He is in a low saturation lighting however running into the light which acts as his safety as he runs further away from the train station. This shot links really well with the typical conventions of a thriller such as the camera, lighting and sound going on in this shot.

In this scene I have linked the joker kills 3 people on the train.

M-E-S- The lighting in this scene inspires me as it tells the audience s by the lighting that the joker is about to do something bad. The lighting on the train keeps flashing to a blackout and flashing back to normal lighting, almost flickering between the two. Blackout lighting signifies unknown and makes the audience curious on what the joker is going to do. Also signifies danger and the gut feeling of something about to happen. The blackout makes the scene intense and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The lighting blackouts more frequently the closer it gets to him killing the 3 men. When he is getting beaten up by them it constantly blackouts, signifying the climax is about to happen. When he shots the gun there is a flash of brighter lighting from the gun, there is a bright flash of light on the men he has just shot. This is effective as it creates shock and will leave the audience in disbelief. It is dark outside, which shows the dark atmosphere replicating the events that have just occurred. The streetlights are on which creates some light so we can see the setting he is in and his shadow on the wall when running away from the train station. The setting is also effective as the train looks old with graffiti on the windows, signifying threat and a sense of danger. The old train is why the light keeps flashing on and off. Creating the intense effect. The costume that the joker wears signifies mental illness and how he feels like he is different to others. The way he is treated on the train connotes the stereotype of how mentally ill people are brushed over and treated with disrespect and made fun out of. The fact he is dressed like a clown further signifies how he feels he is treated like a 'clown' who is just living to be made fun of.
