Research into music

Music is key in all films, however is especially important in thrillers. It helps to build suspense, tension and can bring a fear element to the audience within a scene. Without music in films the audience may find it boring and will find it harder to prepare for any jump scares where you can anticipate that a jump scare may occur, and with no music it is very hard to build tension and suspense, which in my research and reflection suspense is a key convention of a thriller that may audience like to see in a thriller. Therefore music in my thriller is going to be key as It will help me to build suspense. Music will be effective in the opening scene as it will make my thriller higher quality and more effective towards the audience grabbing their attention from the start.

A good example of a thriller that uses music effectively is JAWS

JAWS is an old fashioned thriller, but is known for its music, which is now iconic and in my opinion the music made the film. Without the music JAWS would not of been as successful however the music is key to this film. The music plays whenever the shark is about to attack, it builds a lot of tension and makes the audience on the edge of their seats whenever the music plays as they know the shark is about to attack. JAWS uses sound to encode a message to the audience. From this I can also have music that encodes a message where the audience knows something is about to happen.

Psycho also uses music effectively, with high pitched screeching and upbeat tempo when the murderer strikes whilst the victim is in the shower. It is effective as it is an enigma code letting the audience know that something bad is going to happen via the music.

Diagetic sound

Diagetic sound is any sound that originates from the narrative. Examples of diagetic sounds can include voices of characters, sounds of objects, music coming from the radio or instruments- anything that exists from the story world.

Non-Diagetic sound

Non-diagetic sound is sound that does not come directly from the world of the story on-screen. Traditional film music and voice over narration are typical examples of non-diagetic sound. The characters in the film are unaware of these sounds as they don't exist in their world. Non-diagetic is sound that is edited in after it has been filmed.
